WEEK 7: BANKS AND CHARITIES

WEEK 7: BANKS AND CHARITIES

Canadian banks are Canada's largest corporate taxpayers and largest corporate donors. According to the Canadian Bankers Association, in 2007, seven of Canada's Schedule 1 banks donated $197 million to charities in Canada and around the world. These contributions support education, youth, and health care. The banks also support amateur athletes, the arts and community events. For example, the Bank of Montreal is the principal sponsor of Skate Canada and is a founding sponsor of the Kids Help Phone.

Because banks are the largest taxpayers in Canada, their profits help build roads, schools, hospitals and many other governmental activities. In addition, banks are also committed to helping the environment.

I think companies should give money to charities if they are able to, but this is not the only to give back to the society. Besides donating money, a company can also support others by participating in fundraising programs or encouraging customers to donate. Giving money to charities should not be mandatory but it’s something could be done. Advantages of paying back to the community that once supported you always outweigh its drawbacks. This can not only help people who are in trouble, but also can potentially raise its reputation.

Do you think that companies should be obliged to be front-runners in helping the environment? Why or Why Not?
I believe companies should always be front-runners in helping the environment. First of all, companies are major consumers of natural resources. For instance, Intel needs a large amount of metal to make their machines and products, massive consumption of electricity to run their data centres and lots of paper to package their chips. The bigger the consumption, the more responsibility it should take to help the environment. What’s more, companies usually have bigger influences. Their employees are more likely participate when their employers do so, which brings another group of people. Also, companies are more capable of hosting some fundraising programs. That impact customers a lot and make them more willing to help the environment.

    1. I agree with you about your point on how donating money isn't the only thing companies can do to but they can raise awareness or raise money for a charity by hosting a fundraiser.

    2. i agree with your comment that by donating a company can improve their reputation. Not only are they gaining respect and a good reputation, but they are also making their community a better place to live, gaining respect from your own employees and having the advantage of connecting and networking. If it is possible for a company to do so they definitely should because it is a win win situation for everyone involved.

    3. I agree with you that companies should always be front-runners in helping the environment. Companies are major consumer of natural sources and they can't just get away from that, they should help the environment the most because from my point of view they are the ones who have destroy the planet the most and a lot of companies don't care and just keep doing it without trying to do something else for the environment.

  2. Do you think that companies should give money to charities?  Why or Why Not?
I think companies should give money to charities. This is not only giving it back to the community and be responsible about it, it’s that the fund that the companies donate can actually motivate and carry the project forward. Some charities have better technology and skilled experts than the company in improving a particular project but just needs fund to do the studies and trials. If more companies donate money to these charities, many new technologies could be accomplished. For example, if a charity is trying to help ALS patients, and they hires experts trying to find a cure for the disease, if there are companies that donate great amount of money, this gives the group enough funds to do the studies, trials on finding a cure for the ALS. The money could also be a motivation for more people to get involved and study the disease, someday the cure might be found and this could be a great accomplishment in human history. Meanwhile, by donating money to charities, the companies can also gain good public relations, they might meet some potential customers in the organization.

Do you think that companies should be obliged to be front-runners in helping the environment?  Why or Why Not?
I think Companies should be obliged to be front-runners in helping the environment. Especially for the companies whose production may have an impact on the environment, they should be responsible for the land they are operating on. Because they have already made an impact on the environment, they should make amends to the environment and balance out the harmful impact, or try to implement green projects into the production process.

    1. I agree with you that companies should be obliged to be front-runners in helping the environment and I think that it’s only fair for them to help reduce environmental damage that they contributed so much to. Do you think it would be a good policy that companies would have to at least do enough good for the environment to even out their impact on it?

    2. I agree with you that companies should give money to charities to both motivate research and create funds. Companies whose products or processes are potentially harmful to the environment should at least do something to cancel out some of their impacts. Do you believe there are some alternative ways to give back to the society if the company is unable to donate?

    3. I agree with your point regarding companies efforts to minimize their carbon footprint. Companies are the main contenders to environment harm so it seems right that they should be leaders in eco-friendly efforts.

  3. Do you think that companies should give money to charities? Why or Why Not?
Yes, I think that companies should donate money to charities for several reasons. One of which is that since some companies are so large and therefore have large profits, they are able to donate quite a lot of money. Individual people cannot donate that much money so when a company does it makes a big difference and can help a lot of people. Another reason is that if you’re able to donate, I think that you should so as long as a company isn’t having financial problems, I believe they should be donating to charities. I also think that it means a lot when a company donates to charities because they are able to publicise it further and make more people aware of the cause. One last reason why I think that companies should give money to charities is to gain trust and support from consumers and show people that they care about their community.

Do you think that companies should be obliged to be front-runners in helping the environment? Why or Why Not?
Yes, think that companies should be obliged to be front-runners in helping the environment. I think this because companies are huge contributors to our environmental problems, therefore, they should be making big changes to reduce the impact of their business practices on the environment. If all companies were helping the environment efficiently it would make a massive difference to the environment because of how many companies there are and that their practices often do harm the environment. Also, when companies publicise what needs to be done, what you can do or how you can work with them to help the environment it creates awareness and people makes changes to their lives to help the environment too.

    1. I agree with you that companies should donate money to charities because companies have large profits and they can give more money to charities than just a single person, and the companies could really make a difference and help a lot. I also believe that when a company donates money to a charity it makes them look good and gives them more publicity. Do you think some companies donate money just because they want to look good or because they actually care?

  5. Do you think that companies should give money to charities? Why or Why Not?

Yes, I do think that companies should give money to charities. Companies have more money than most people so they could be able to donate more without it effecting them. Also companies can get a better reputation for donating to charity’s because the consumers will believe that they are a good company if they hear they donated. Companies can even go further than just donating, then can also persuade the public to donate by say that they will double the amount of money that their consumer donate.

Do you think that companies should be obliged to be front-runners in helping the environment? Why or Why Not?

Yes, I do think that companies should be front-runners in helping the environment because lots of companies have an impact on the environment and even for the companies that don’t have an impact on the environment they should still be helping the environment because lots of companies have extra money. Also just like with charity’s if company’s help out the environment they will gain a reputation and also gain more consumers since the consumers know that the money they are using to buy the good or service could be going towards helping the environment.

    1. I agree with your comments about companies getting the public involved and donating. Many businesses use this angle, such as Walmart and Sobey's on a weekly basis and not only create awareness to each cause, but also help them to raise money. Some of their charities are Backpacks for Kids, breakfast programs. Sick Kids Hospital and Habitat for Humanity, to name a few. All deserving causes being helped out by powerful companies.

  6. I believe it is a company’s social responsibility to donate some of their profits to charity. Not only is it beneficial to the recipients but it also benefits the company in many ways. By donating to charities a company is able to not only strengthen their brand image but they can increase brand loyalty, differentiation, product awareness and visibility. By making a qualifying donation, the amount paid out is considered donation, which means that a company can claim it in their company income tax return and deduct it from their taxable profits. This is a positive situation for everyone involved because the company profits and the charity benefits. Although Walmart isn’t thought of as an ethical company, since 2003, Walmart Canada has donated 19 million dollars to the Red Cross. This amazing donation has changed lives and assisted numerous people around the world in a positive way. How can anyone be against a company donating?

I do think that companies should take the initiative in helping clean up our environment since most businesses, especially the large ones, are contributing to the problem. Therefore, if they are financially sound, then it is their social responsibility to use their position of power to help improve the situation. Everything from recycling to energy conservation, makes an impact on our environment. It is the responsibility of companies to do their share to reduce the operational footprint on the environment. I feel the government should make green practises mandatory and monitor business practises to ensure that they are doing the necessary guidelines to improve our environment. I believe that it is not only a company’s social responsibility but also their ethical responsibility to help place the world in a stronger environmental position. If all companies were as committed as TD Bank Group’s Friends of the Environment Foundation, can you imagine the change we could make in our world? $57 million to over 20,000 organizations is very impressive.

    1. I too think that companies should be taking the initiative to help clean the environment especially since they are such large contributors to environmental problems we’re facing like global warming. You discussed the government taking action to ensure that businesses are environmentally friendly, do you think that that is what would have to happen for many companies to change their practices?

  7. Do you think that companies should give money to charities? Why or Why Not?
I think companies should give money to charities if they are able to, but this need to be smart and not just giving money away, also there shouldn't be substantial amounts of money being given away to charities that you don't know much about. Giving money to charities should be very liked in the business community i think and it should be frowned upon if you do not donate. This will be an all around good effect since it is benefiting all parties and making the world a better place

Do you think that companies should be obliged to be front-runners in helping the environment? Why or Why Not?
I believe companies should definitely try to help and improve the environment especially if the damage was caused by them. Big corporations and companies are in demand of many natural resources and this often leads to the damage of our environment. If these companies are able to be environmentally cautious while using the natural environment, it is not only creating a good reputation it is also helping the future of their company and our world. To conclude I very much believe that it should be almost mandatory that front-runners should always be environmentally conscious and go out of their way to give back to the land that helped them with their success.

    1. I strongly agree with your statement that companies should know something about the charities they’re donating to as I think that’s very important to help because you care and not just for a good reputation. Do you have any standards on how much companies should know about/be involved with the charities they donate to?

    2. You are making a very good point that companies should know who they are donating to. And they should give back to the society as they are big users of natural resources. Creating standards for companies could help the environment and help this problem in the long run.

    4. I feel that your point regarding charity notoriety and knowledge is very important to be aware of. Money can help anyone and anything but knowing where to put it to make the biggest difference is what really matters. I also agree with your last point about how companies should give back and help the land and people that made them.

  8. Do you think that companies should give money to charities? Why or Why Not?
I think that companies should give money to charities. Charities help the people by providing them with the necessities for life, or improving the quality of it. By giving money to charities, companies are showing that they care about more than money-that they care about the wellbeing of their consumers. Charities can help people get above the poverty line, and as a result of this receive better education. This is beneficial to companies because these people might be future employees there. Not only this, but donating money to charitable organizations improves a company’s image as well. This will attract more customers.

Do you think that companies should be obliged to be front-runners in helping the environment? Why or Why Not?
I think that companies should not be obliged to be front-runners in helping the environment. Companies usually are the first to adopt new environmentally friendly habits, and people follow. It certainly would be a good thing if companies are the front-runners in helping the environment. However, I believe that they should have the choice of whether or not they want to do so. If a consumer had to pick between two products of the same quality and price, one made by an environmentally friendly company and one made by a company that isn't, the consumer will probably choose the environmentally friendly company's product. Currently, companies are not forced to find new eco-friendly ways to do their work. However, many companies are, and it should remain that way. The companies that do not will eventually develop a bad reputation, lose customers and go out of business. Companies should not be obliged to be front-runners in helping the environment by law, but it is an unspoken rule..

  9. Do you think that companies should give money to charities? Why or Why Not?
I believe that companies should give money to charities, because 1. They benefit of tax relief. 2. They should set an example to everyone i.e. a private person and a private person can also have tax relief. 3. Charities are very important to society and they rely on donations to survive. Most charities do what should be normally done by countries themselves but they don’t have the money. Companies should at least give something back to society (and not only to their shareholders), because somehow they also profit society to make their business work. Especially charities regarding environmental issues should get back a part of the company’s profit, because they the companies uses natural resources and therefore should make sure that the resources are clean. And companies use manpower so they should also be involved in charities concerning people i.e. health issues, education etc.

Do you think that companies should be obliged to be front-runners in helping the environment? Why or Why Not?
For the same reasons I have stated above I believe that yes companies should be obliged. As the article “Banks and environment” shows, all the major Canadian banks already do this. There is no reason why other companies should not do the same and if they don’t want to they should be obliged to. Especially for European businesses, because I think that we are far behind Canada’s environmental charity banking initiative. Companies should be obliged to contribute to a certain percentage of their profit to charities. I think that this is very important to develop environmentally developed at all levels of society. If you want our businesses to survive we need to make sure the earth and its resources survive.

  10. Do you think that companies should give money to charities? Why or Why Not?
Of course companies should donate and give back to their community. If it wasn’t for us (consumers), their success simply wouldn’t be possible. In my view, disadvantages aren’t apparent and it is a win win situation for companies to contribute to charities and donate a portion of their profits. As companies donate, they gain reputation including social responsibility while contributing directly to people’s lives in a positive way. Large companies also gain the tendency to influence their consumers and have the potential to lead a movement amongst multiple people. Company values are also visible through donations. This shows trust, responsibility and care towards their community environment.

Do you think that companies should be obliged to be front-runners in helping the environment? Why or Why Not?
Yes is believe that companies should feel pressure to take on a big role in environmental action. Companies should strive to cancel out their carbon footprint with environmental efforts or reduce their use of materials, water consumption or energy use. Some companies do take the consideration of the environment to hand such as Disney. One of their policies include a ‘no-waste’ factor which demonstrates environmental efforts by placing 0% of their garbage in landfills. With over 52 million people visiting the theme park annually, you can imagine the impact on the environment with the absence of this policy. Again. Through environmental practices, companie gain reputation and respect.
